PEYRONIE’S DISEASE

Overview

Peyronie’s disease is the build-up of scar tissue inside the penis, which can cause pain and bending during an erection. While the cause isn’t entirely clear to researchers, many medical professionals believe that genes, trauma or injury can cause scar tissue to form. The disease is most common in middle-aged men, but it can affect men of all ages. Peyronie’s disease can have a significant negative impact on sexual performance, through a decrease in penile length or inability to get or keep an erection. These factors can contribute to relationship issues with partners, who may also experience pain, even if the patient does not.

Treatment

The disease is not malignant or harmful, even left untreated. Peyronie’s can heal on it’s own over the course of a few months or years, however treatment is possible and effective. Treatment can restore the firmness of an erection, and offer a return to normal sexual performance. While many urologists avoid treating Peyronie’s disease, Dr. Kuan believes in exploring all options for his patients to find the best solution.  Treatment options include: observation, traction, injections and surgery (ie. grafting, plication, penile implant).  Fortunately, most men do not require surgery and improvement is seen using minimally invasive enzyme injection therapy, collagenase (Xiaflex).

Contact Dr. Kuan if you’re experiencing penile pain and/or curvature to learn more about the condition, have a penile ultrasound and decide if treatment is right for you.
